scores and scorestreams

I began working with networked, screen-displayed scores in 2008, using MAX software to build what I call “scorestreams.” Scorestreams are algorithmic, networked compositions that are displayed dynamically on computer screens for improvisers to interpret. I’ve focused so far on creating software that displays pre-composed notations (both staff and graphic), varying the order and pacing to create a different version of the piece in each performance.

Paper scores are still more practical for most concerts, but I am more and more attracted to scorestreams as a way to animate pre-composed materials so they change and flow with us. I am also working on scorestreams that incorporate interactivity, meaning that the graphics or electronic sounds change in response to audio or other input. I am fascinated with the idea of making the score itself an improvising member of the band.

My latest scorestream is a concert-length composition titled Somewhere In The Upstream, dedicated to my former teacher, Yusef Lateef. This piece was premiered in late 2014 by my electro-acoustic trio featuring Chris Tordini and Dan Weiss, and was a commission from the Fromm Foundation. In 2016, I received a New Music USA Project Award to support performing and recording the piece for future CD release. There are a few excerpts of it in this video about my trio, and I’ve provided a link to a PDF about the “score” below. I also wrote about scorestreams for a short essay in the Leonardo Music Journal.

Scores

I’ve learned a lot from playing with mentors and collaborators and seeing the diverse ways that they use notation in improvisatory music. I am happy to share some of my own scores below in that spirit.
