I’m thrilled to be performing two concerts in Southern California with drummer Han Bennink, violinist/violist Mary Oliver and bassist Mark Dresser. They’re all phenomenal improvisers and wonderful people, and it’s always a special privilege to play with Han, who has been part of this music’s history since the 1960s and has such a beautiful mix of intense energy and deep playfulness. Mary is an incredibly versatile and imaginative musician who I wish I could work with often (she lives in Amsterdam, as does Han), and Mark is one of my closest collaborators these days and always an inspiration. It’s been a couple years since we last played together as a quartet, but you can check out Robert Bush’s review of one of our previous concerts from 2012. We’re at the Blue Whale in LA on Feb. 2 and The Loft in San Diego on Feb. 4. Hope to see some my SoCal friends there! [Update: If you want a literary description of what happened at these concerts, you can check out Robert Bush’s glowing review of the Loft concert.]
