Neofonía festival and Cauces Sónicos concert

This summer and fall, we started the Cauces Sónicos (Sonic Channels) project, co-directed by Wilfrido Terrazas and me in collaboration with many other creative artists and students. Cauces is a two-year project with various layers of activities extending across the borderlands region, including professional collaborations to create new music, connecting students and faculty across several universities, and giving workshops for community members. We began this summer with a collective group of artists developing some new music in July and then presenting it in September at the Neofonía festival at the UABC in Ensenada, MX. Most of us who played in the ensemble composed new works for this concert, and in addition to me and Wilfrido the group also included Álvaro Díaz, Iván Trujillo, Teresa Díaz de Cossio Sánchez, Camilo Zamudio, Fabricio Cavero, Edwin Montes, José Luis Rodríguez, Esther Gámez and Natalia Merlano Gómez. It was a joy to collaborate with everyone and perform for an incredibly warm and enthusiastic audience of students, festival guests and community members at the Neofonía festival. We are looking forward to continuing Cauces this fall with a collaborative course taught across UABC, UCSD and UCI as well as more concerts and workshops to come!

Here’s a video about the Neofonía festival at UABC, including a short interview with Wilfrido towards the end about Cauces, and also a picture capturing a moment I enjoyed watching, when Wilfrido shared his instrument setup with a young listener:
